Blackburn Honored for Work on Behalf of Seniors

Statement

Congressman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) issued the following statement after receiving the AMAC Award, the Association of Mature American Citizens highest honor, awarded to legislators with a record of devoted support for mature Americans and seniors.

"There is nothing more important to Americans than security -- whether we are talking national, health, or financial.

"At times it seems there are many factors that are working against our security. That is why I introduced HR 603, the Savings for Seniors Act. This legislation places all Social Security tax receipts that are not used to pay current Social Security expenses in an actual trust fund and holds those funds in an off-budget account. These funds can not be used for any payment other than Social Security benefits and will move from this designated account only when Congress passes legislation that approves an investment vehicle that does not allow the federal government to raid the Social Security trust fund. The original idea for the legislation was the product of a seniors town hall when attendees expressed concern about the viability of the trust fund for the long term and for future workers.

"I want to thank AMAC for all the work they do to protect Social Security for the people who have worked for decades, have had the federal government extract their portion of the paycheck first and who need that money in retirement. It was an honor to receive the AMAC Award and to have their support for legislation that is part of our effort to protect our seniors," Blackburn said.
