Fifth District Receives $9.5million

(Washington, DC)-Today, Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II announced that he has secured $9.5 million in federal funding for various water and flood control projects in Missouri's Fifth Congressional District. The funds were included in H.R. 2419, the Energy and Water Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2006, a $29.7 billion spending bill that was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives last night. The bill now awaits consideration by the U.S. Senate.
"I am highly committed to the development of Missouri's water and infrastructure," said Congressman Cleaver. "Protection from flooding and a solid water system are critical to stimulating our economy and enhancing the quality of life for residents of the Fifth District. I am proud to bring these federal water funds home to my constituents."
Cleaver obtained funds for the following water and flood projects:
$4 million for the continued design and construction of the Blue River Basin flood control project, providing flood protection for the Dodson Industrial District consisting of a levee, floodwall and gate system connecting the Bannister Road Federal Complex levee at the upstream end to the embankment of Bruce R. Watkins Drive on the downstream end. The Dodson Industrial District contains 30 commercial and light industrial firms, employing 1,250 people.
$5 million for the continued construction and design of the Blue River Channel, located along the Blue River and tributaries in Kansas City, Jackson County and running through a long-standing business district and many residential neighborhoods. The project plan consists of a channel modification, realignment to eliminate severe bends, channel deepening and widening, a grade control structure and upstream levee along 12.5 miles of the Blue River channel, providing flood protection for a one in 30-year flood and reducing flooding for less frequent events.
$500,000 for the Kansas Citys Local Protection System to complete a feasibility study of the Metropolitan flood protection system on the Missouri and Kansas Rivers in the Kansas City Metropolitan area. The study involves the evaluation of plans for increasing the flood protection of the system after considering the effects of the 1993 flood and new Missouri River flood profiles.
