Issue Position: Budget

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2015

As a current member of the House Budget Committee and a former Chair of the Joint Finance Committee in the Wisconsin State Assembly, I believe our budgets should reflect our values. I voted against the budget for fiscal year 2014, introduced by the House Republicans and Rep. Paul Ryan (R- WI). This budget kept the devastating sequestration cuts to programs that are essential for the most vulnerable members of our Wisconsin communities including Head Start and Meals on Wheels, while turning Medicare into a voucher program and keeping tax breaks for oil and gas companies.

I support a budget that makes investments in our future generations and protects programs that advance our entire society. I believe our budget should strengthen Social Security and Medicare and invest in job growth through infrastructure, education, and research and development, while responsibly reducing our deficits and cutting wasteful spending and redundant programs where they exist. I promote a balanced approach, with commonsense initiatives, promoting economic growth and reducing the deficit without unduly threatening the security of Wisconsin's middle class and seniors. Instead of kicking the can down the road, I believe we need a comprehensive budget that lays out priorities for the nation.
