Statement

After a month zigzagging across the 14th Congressional District, I went back to D.C. this week to tackle our nation's business.

The President's Iran Deal

On Friday, I voted against H.R. 3461, To Approve the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, signed at Vienna on July 14, 2015, relating to the nuclear program of Iran.

While that's a lengthy title, that bill was the formal way my colleagues and I could stake out a clear position either for, or against, President Obama's Iran Deal.

After deliberately reading through the deal, getting classified briefings and reading the classified documents that were provided to Congress, I voted against this deal because it will not make the United States, our greatest ally Israel, or the Middle East safer.

In the end all this deal will do is serve as a speed bump to Iran eventually creating a nuclear weapon, which will create an arms race in one of the most dangerous and volatile regions of the world.

Lastly, I am worried that this deal sets a lasting precedent that it is ok to thwart international law in order to get what you want. By lifting an effective arms embargo and putting Iran on the path to becoming a nuclear nation, we have now rewarded a rogue nation for bad behavior.

Thanking Our Troops

Each year The USO hosts a great event on Capitol Hill where my colleagues, staff and anyone else interested can come by to pack care baskets and write thank you notes to our troops overseas.

As we debated the Iran Deal this week, our nation's heroes were certainly on my mind and it was an honor to be able to spend time writing thank you notes to them.


Military Academy Information Day

As I do every year, I will be hosting a Military Academy Information Day on September 19th.

For those that want to serve our country, I want to make it as easy as possible for them to learn how to do that. So I encourage anyone who is interested to attend and find out the steps they need to take to make their goal a reality.

The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the Auburn Career Center's Technology Learning Center Building located at 8221 Auburn Road in Concord Township.

Representatives from the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy (West Point), U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Naval Academy and U.S. Coast Guard Academy have been invited to attend, make presentations and take questions.

The program is open to students of all ages and their families. Anyone who has an interest in learning more about the service academies and the nomination process is welcome and encouraged to attend. For additional information, please contact my office at 440-352-3939.
