It was great to be home in Northeast Ohio this week, the land of common sense. It's always refreshing to be home traveling throughout the district, hearing directly from the people who are being affected by the policies we are debating, changing, or improving in Washington.
Unfortunately, I think many of my colleagues in Congress are too disconnected from what their constituents actually want. I've made a very concerted effort never to fall into that trap.
Meeting with Realtors
On Monday I had a chance to meet with a large group from the Ohio Association of REALTORS. I gave them an update on what we are working on in D.C. and heard directly from them about some of the issues they are most concerned with, particularly the problem of patent trolls and how we can stop them. You can read more about patent trolls here.
Investing in STEM
One of the things I have really focused on in Congress is the importance of educating our children in STEM. If you don't know, STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.
Manufacturing is one of the biggest industries in OH-14, with over 1,500 manufacturing companies that support over 61,000 jobs. It's crucial that we get our youth thinking about the many viable career paths available at manufacturing companies.
This week I had the chance to visit JM Performance Products in Fairport Harbor and discuss these issues, and many others, with them. You can read more about my visit here.
Attending a Service Academy
As you may have read in my Weekly Wrap last week, nominations for students to attend a military academy are due to my office by October 30th.
More information can be found on my website here or by calling my office at 440-352-3939 and asking for Maureen.
Grand Opening of Cardinal Credit Union
It was an honor to be at the grand opening of the Cardinal Credit Union branch at Hiram College. Nearly 30 years ago, I could not get a loan from any banks when I was trying to start my private practice, but St. Monica's Credit Union was the only place that would give me a loan.
So, I am always eager to learn about the issues facing our local credit unions and see how I can work with them to make it easier for those who need a loan to get one.
National Association of Homebuilders
For the third year in a row, I had the chance to meet with members of the National Association of Homebuilders. Besides being held at the famous Hellreigel's in Mentor, which is always a treat to visit, this annual breakfast gives me a chance to meet with a diverse group of constituents.
They were eager to hear what we are working on in D.C., to discuss what I think will happen when my colleagues and I elect a new Speaker of the House and, of course, the Presidential race.
I also heard from them about how the EPA's Waters of the United States rule, which would essentially put every lake, pond, and stream under federal jurisdiction, would cripple their business if it was enacted. I've worked hard to make sure this overreaching rule doesn't go into effect, which you can read more about here.
I make a big effort to keep my social media networks up to date, so I can connect with my constituents.
I hope you will take a second to "Follow" me on Twitter & "Like" my Facebook page.
Every day I am honored to serve as your voice in Congress,
