Statement

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

As I have traveled throughout the district recently, the number one thing I've heard my constituents talk about is what we are going to do about the terror threats to our country.

With Paris still shell shocked over the terror attacks, and the rest of Western Europe on high alert, it is imperative that we hit the pause button on allowing Syrian refugees into the U.S.

It has been two weeks since the terrorist attacks and the halt to normal life is a stark reminder that this administration's attempt to contain ISIS has failed.

This is why the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill last week that would pause the Syrian refugee program until we can be certain no one coming here is a threat to our country.

Some people have openly wondered why we should halt the flow of these refugees, my response to that is simple: Don't take it from me, take it from some of the administration's top security people.

Testifying before Congress last month, FBI Director James Comey put it most starkly:

"If someone has not made a ripple in the pond in Syria in a way that would get their identity or their interests reflected in our databases, we can query our databases until the cows come home but nothing will show up because we have no record of that person."

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson, meanwhile, has said:

"It is true that we are not going to know a whole lot about the Syrians that come forth in this process. ... That is definitely a challenge. ... We know that organizations like ISIL might like to exploit this program."

This is a moment, then, when it is better to be safe than sorry.
