McCaul Statement on President's Plan to Close Guantanamo Detention Facility

Homeland Security Committee Chairman McCaul today blasted President Obama's "reckless" plan to transfer hardened terrorists to U.S. soil. Many of the terrorists held at the Guantanamo (GTMO) detention facility are responsible for thousands of Americans' deaths on 9/11. Chairman McCaul points out that the President is pushing for GTMO's closure and the transfer of dangerous terrorists at a time when the United States is facing an unprecedented tempo for Islamist terror threats at home.

"President Obama's latest attempt to close the Guantanamo detention facility at a time when ISIS and al Qaeda are opening training camps, is reckless. If he moves forward with this, it would be blatantly unconstitutional, flouting laws passed by Congress. I hope Americans will stand up and oppose this plan, as they have before. Even more, the President continues to be bent on releasing dozens of additional detainees overseas, despite the fact that at least one-third of freed Guantanamo inmates are believed to have returned to the fight. Not only does the President's plan demonstrate a failure to grasp the Islamist terror threat we face, it would end up bolstering extremists' ranks abroad and putting crosshairs on the communities where these fanatics are transferred here at home."
