Location: Washington, DC

Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) applauded a unanimous decision from the U.S. Board of Geographic Names, which today accepted a proposal to officially rename Coon Lake and Coon Creek in Lake Chelan National Recreation Area. The sites will now be known as Howard Lake and Howard Creek, respectively, in honor of an African American prospector who held mining claims near the lake in the 1890s.

"This name change is a small but important step toward correcting a historical wrong in our state. I applaud the Board for making a swift decision."
