Congresswoman Clarke Notifies Property Owners of Extended Deadline for Flood Insurance Claims Related to Hurricane Sandy

Statement

Date: Sept. 21, 2015
Location: Brooklyn, NY

Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke released the following statement on the extension of the deadline -- to October 15, 2015 -- for National Flood Insurance Program policyholders to request a review by the Federal Emergency Management Agency of their Hurricane Sandy flood insurance claims. FEMA has the authority to review decisions by insurance companies on flood insurance claims.

"Since the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, the families of Sheepshead Bay and Gerritsen Beach have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to rebuilding their homes and neighborhoods. A full recovery from Hurricane Sandy depends on homeowners receiving full compensation for the damage that occurred in the storm. In disputes between homeowners and insurance companies, FEMA has a critical responsibility to function as a neutral arbitrator to determine the exact amount that each families should receive. I encourage anyone who has experienced any difficulty in obtaining full compensation from their insurance company to contact FEMA immediately to resolve any discrepancies. I and my staff members in Brooklyn will assist homeowners in completing the process of requesting a review of their insurance claims. If we continue to work with each other, we will achieve a full recovery."
