Schumer Announces More Than $1.1 Million in Rental Assistance For Over 100 Homeless Veterans

U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today announced more than $1.1 million in federal U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) vouchers for public housing agencies in New York City that have agreed to provide rental assistance to in-need veterans. The HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program combines Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental assistance for homeless veterans with case management and clinical services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Specifically, $590,957 in HUD-VASH project-based vouchers will go to the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and $579,240 in HUD-VASH project-based vouchers for the New York Housing Preservation and Development. Schumer said that according to HUD, there were 1,645 homeless veterans in the New York City area last year. Schumer explained that these HUD-VASH project-based vouchers will help provide much-needed rental assistance to at-risk veterans in the New York City area.

"Even one homeless veteran is one too many. These brave men and women put life and limb on the line to protect our country and we owe it to them to ensure they can find affordable, safe housing. This $1.1 million in HUD-VASH vouchers will help provide New York City with the resources it needs to ensure our veterans stay off the streets after protecting the many freedoms we know and cherish and I am pleased that this funding has come just in time for Veteran's Day," said Senator Schumer.
