Lujan Statement on Short-Term Funding Bill

Statement

Date: Sept. 30, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico's Third District released the following statement today after voting in support of a Continuing Resolution that prevents a government shutdown by providing funding until December 11.

"Today's vote prevents another Republican shutdown by funding the government until December; however it lays the groundwork for another shutdown if House Republicans do not finally come to the table and negotiate a budget that helps our economy grow.

"The last government shutdown cost our economy $24 billion and 120,000 private sector jobs, while workers were furloughed and veterans' disability claims were stalled. The threat of another shutdown has caused needless stress for people in our communities and uncertainty for small businesses that work with the federal government. New Mexicans and the American people cannot afford the dysfunction of a Republican Congress that has proved themselves unable to govern, lurching from one manufactured crisis to another. It's time for them to do their job so we can help hard-working people get ahead and stay ahead."
