Gov. Scott: Miami Added More Than 21,000 Jobs Over the Year

Today, Governor Rick Scott announced that the Miami area gained 21,800 new jobs over the year in September 2015. Miami's unemployment rate declined by 0.6 percentage point over the year, from 6.8 percent in September 2014 to 6.2 percent in September 2015. Florida businesses have added 941,000 private-sector jobs since December 2010.

Governor Scott said, "Florida is the best state in the nation to start a business and create more jobs. Miami has already added over 21,800 new jobs over the year, and their unemployment rate is continuing to drop. This is more good news for families in South Florida."

The industries with the largest job gains over the year in the metro area were leisure and hospitality with 7,000 new jobs; professional and business services with 5,500 new jobs; and trade, transportation, and utilities with 4,200 new jobs. The Miami metro area had the third highest job demand in Florida in September 2015 with 34,460 job openings, including 7,992 openings for high-wage, high-skill science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) occupations.

Florida created 8,700 private-sector jobs in September 2015, and a total of 941,000 private-sector jobs since December 2010. Florida's statewide unemployment rate for September 2015 was 5.2 percent. In September, more than 40,000 Floridians were placed in jobs by CareerSource South Florida and the state's other 23 regional workforce boards.
