Gov. Rick Scott: Fort Lauderdale Gained 28,000 Jobs Over the Year

Today, Governor Rick Scott announced that the Fort Lauderdale area gained 28,000 jobs over the year in August 2015. The Fort Lauderdale area's unemployment rate declined by 1.1 percentage points over the year, from 6.2 percent in August 2014 to 5.1 percent in August 2015. Florida businesses have added 940,600 private-sector jobs since December 2010.

Governor Scott said, "With 28,000 jobs created over the year, the Fort Lauderdale area's economy continues to thrive. More businesses are succeeding and creating jobs in South Florida which means more opportunities for families to live their dreams in the Sunshine State."

The industries with the largest job gains over the year were professional and business services with 6,200 new jobs, construction with 5,700 new jobs, trade, transportation, and utilities with 4,700 new jobs, and education and health services with 3,900 new jobs. In August 2015, the Fort Lauderdale metro area added the most jobs of all the state's metro areas in construction. Nine of the ten major industry sectors gained jobs over the year in August 2015. In August 2015, the Fort Lauderdale metro area was ranked fourth among all metro areas in Florida for online job demand with 25,711 openings and also ranked fourth for high wage, high skill science technology engineering math (STEM) job openings with 6,477 job openings.

Florida created 20,100 private-sector jobs in August 2015, and a total of 940,600 private-sector jobs since December 2010. Florida's statewide unemployment rate for August 2015 was 5.3 percent. In August, more than 37,900 Floridians were placed in jobs by CareerSource Broward and the state's other 23 regional workforce boards.
