Gov. Rick Scott: The Miami Area Added More Than 26,000 Jobs Over the Year

Governor Rick Scott announced today that the Miami area gained 26,500 new jobs in August 2015 compared to a year ago. The unemployment rate declined by 1.0 percentage point over the year, from 7.3 percent in August 2014 to 6.3 percent in August 2015.  Across the state, Florida businesses have added 940,600 private-sector jobs since December 2010.

Governor Scott said, "The Miami area saw another month of job creation with more than 26,000 new jobs over the year. The unemployment rate also dropped by a full percentage point over the year which means more South Florida residents are able to find jobs and provide for their families."

The industries with the largest job gains over the year in the metro area were leisure and hospitality with 7,900 new jobs, education and health services with 6,500 new jobs, and trade, transportation, and utilities with 5,300 new jobs. The Miami metro area had the third highest online job demand in Florida in August 2015 with 34,087 job openings and had the third-highest number of openings for high wage, high skill science technology engineering math (STEM) occupations in August 2015 with 7,948 online openings.

Florida created 20,100 private-sector jobs in August 2015, and a total of 940,600 private-sector jobs since December 2010. Florida's statewide unemployment rate for August 2015 was 5.3 percent. In August, more than 37,900 Floridians were placed in jobs by CareerSource South Florida and the state's other 23 regional workforce boards.
