Gov. Rick Scott: Orlando Area Continues to Lead Florida in Job Creation

Statement

Today, Governor Rick Scott announced that the Orlando area gained 42,100 new jobs over the year in August 2015, the highest number of new jobs among all Florida metro areas for 31 consecutive months. The Orlando area's unemployment rate declined by 1.2 percentage points over the year, from 6.3 percent in August 2014 to 5.1 percent in August 2015. Florida businesses have added 940,600 private-sector jobs since December 2010.

Governor Scott said, "Orlando has led the state's metro areas in job creation for more than two and a half years, which is great news. With over 40,000 new jobs created over the year, it's clear that more families in Central Florida are finding opportunities to succeed."

In August 2015, the industries with the highest job gains over the year in the Orlando metro area were in leisure and hospitality with 14,700 new jobs, trade, transportation, and utilities with 9,500 new jobs, and financial activities with 5,200 new jobs. The metro area had the second-highest online job demand in Florida in August 2015 with 37,141 openings and also ranked number two in high wage, high skill science technology engineering math (STEM) demand in the state with 9,616 openings in those fields.

Florida created 20,100 private-sector jobs in August 2015, and a total of 940,600 private-sector jobs since December 2010. Florida's statewide unemployment rate for August 2015 was 5.3 percent. In August, more than 37,900 Floridians were placed in jobs by CareerSource Central Florida and the state's other 23 regional workforce boards.
