Dear Neighbors,
This week I voted for the Bipartisan Budget Act. For at least the next two years, this legislation will remove the threat of another shutdown and preserve the full faith and credit of the United States. While not permanent, these are positive developments. Read my full statement on this important vote on my website.
In addition, I voted to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank. Helping our employers grow and create jobs and opportunity isn't a partisan issue, and we should be doing everything in our power to rebuild our nation's manufacturing base and support Illinois workers. Read all about this issue here.
I also joined Senator Durbin to announce a $14 million TIGER Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation that that will allow Metra to replace the Fox River Bridge in Elgin. Rebuilding the 134-year-old Fox River Bridge will spur local economic development and create well-paying jobs in the 8th District, save Illinois commuters thousands of hours in delays each year and improve passenger safety.
And I was glad to introduce the Community College to Career Fund Act, which promotes partnerships between community colleges and local businesses like Harper College's Advanced Manufacturing Program to train workers for available jobs in high-demand industries, with Senator Al Franken this week.
At home in the 8th, I spoke at the Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) Regional Leadership Academy about how we can help advance the Asian American community in our great state and across the country and I joined Prism Healthcare at the opening of new location in Schaumburg, which will provide our neighbors with access to a quality, full-service medical supply store. I am also accepting nominations for the five U.S. Military Service Academies, so if you or someone you know is interested in attending one of them, you can learn more about the process here.
I hope you and your family have a fun and safe Halloween weekend!
Sincerely,
Congresswoman Duckworth
