Van Hollen Statement on Passage of Bipartisan Budget Act

Statement

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement after House passage of the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015:

"This bipartisan budget agreement gets us closer to ending the harmful sequester and finally making the kind of investments needed to keep America safe and competitive. It will help create jobs, protect seniors, strengthen Social Security and Medicare, and keep the full faith and credit of the United States intact. While not perfect, this agreement is much preferable to the economic calamity we would have faced in a matter of days without it.

"Congress now has the opportunity to tackle the many pressing issues that have fallen by the wayside amid the manufactured crises pushed by the extreme Tea Party faction of the Republican Party. I hope we can come together to address the biggest challenge we face today -- creating an economy that works for all Americans, not just those at the very top. We must address stagnant wages, affordable education, climate change, criminal justice reform, and many other pressing issues. It's time to get to work so families in Maryland and across the country can get ahead."
