Van Hollen Statement on the Pope's Visit to Cuba

Statement

Date: Sept. 19, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

"Today Pope Francis, who played a key role in the process that led to Alan Gross's freedom, arrives in Cuba. His visit highlights the importance of engagement with our adversaries to seek to achieve better understanding and work to build a more peaceful world. After 54 years of a failed policy of isolation, President Obama's bold vision of a renewed relationship with Cuba has given hope to the Cuban people. Congress must now continue this progress by lifting the trade embargo to further empower the people of Cuba and forge a productive relationship between our two nations."
