Fox News "On the Record with Greta Van Susteren" Transcript: Hollen Discusses Investigation into Tragic Death of Montgomery County Teen in Paraguay

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN, FOX: As Alex's family desperately searches for answers, they have help from their Congressman. Representative Chris Van Hollen has been investigating the case as well. He's even called on the U.S. State Department to act. Congressman Van Hollen goes On the Record. Good evening, sir. I know from speaking to the family they are quite grateful for your help because this is tough -- you know, when your son in another country gets murdered, trying to get help -- so what can tell me tonight, sir, in terms of pushing this investigation?

REP. CHRIS VAN HOLLEN: It is a real tragedy, Greta. Alex, who lost his life in Paraguay, should right now be enrolled in Montgomery College here in Maryland. That was his plan before this tragic accident. So we've been working hard with the family to try to get to the bottom of things. As indicated, the investigation at the beginning was botched. I have spoken directly to the Ambassador of Paraguay, indicating to the Ambassador that the FBI is ready to provide any kind of assistance in the investigation if they need it. We've been in touch with the FBI and they've said that they are standing by and ready. As of right now, the current plan is for there to be reenactment of the crime scene this coming week, next week. I spoke to Kim Luk, the aunt, today. And one of the questions, of course, will be whether this fellow Renee, who fled to Germany, will come back. There is no indication at this point in time that he would return to Paraguay for this reenactment. So that's an update. We are working very closely with the family. We are in touch with the FBI. And, as I said, I have been in touch with the Ambassador from Paraguay to the United States.

VAN SUSTEREN: And there's nothing really the U.S. could do about compelling the young man in Germany to go to Paraguay? There's nothing you can do there?

VAN HOLLEN: Well, my understanding is if he does not come for this reenactment, then they'll seek an arrest warrant through INTERPOL to bring him to Paraguay.

VAN SUSTEREN: So Paraguay is getting aggressive then? I mean, at first Paraguay sort of looked the other way. If Paraguay is going to ask for that, that's a big step.

VAN HOLLEN: I think so. As said, they are going to have this reenactment. We have been in touch with our embassy in Paraguay. We have requested, and our embassy there has requested, that we have a representative from the embassy present for the reenactment. We are still waiting to see if that request will be granted.

VAN SUSTEREN: Would you describe Paraguay as being cooperative with us?

VAN HOLLEN: Well, as was indicated, I think the original investigation was botched. But, so far, at least in our communications with the Ambassador -- their Ambassador here -- they seem to understand this terrible situation and understand the concerns of the family. We'll have to wait and see how this reenactment goes. And as you say, whether they do aggressively try to bring Renee to justice. What the family is looking for is justice.
