Keating Applauds $10.5 Million Award to Repair Nantucket Jetty

Statement

Today, the Army Corps of Engineers announced a $10,545,000 award to Mohawk Northeast for jetty repair on Nantucket.

Said Rep Bill Keating, "As recent winters have become more and more severe, the timing of this award couldn't be better. It is critical that our harbors have the appropriate protections during both the winter and summer high season."

According to the award announcement:

"The work consists of repairing both the east and west jetty at the entrance of Nantucket Harbor which were damaged during Hurricane Sandy. Nantucket Harbor is located on the western side of Nantucket Island in Nantucket Sound approximately 25 miles Southeast of Hyannis, Massachusetts, and 22 miles East of Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. The east and west jetty extend into Nantucket Sound and provide protection to vessels transiting into Nantucket Harbor. Specific work tasks are intended to reconstruct severely deteriorated areas of the east and west jetty to authorized dimensions. New stone will replace displaced armor stone to fill in existing gaps in the jetty."

It is estimated that Mohawk Northeast will begin the work by November, with the project scheduled to take 8-12 months.
