Fleming: Why is the House Voting on the Iran Deal?

Statement

Congressman John Fleming, M.D. released the following statement ahead of an anticipated House vote on President Obama's Iran Deal:

"According to the Corker legislation, Congress must be provided "all related materials and annexes" by July 19, 2015. We have passed that deadline, but are still waiting for President Obama to provide Congress with all the required materials. This leads me to wonder why we are voting on an approval or disapproval without having all the information we need to make a decision. The President has not provided Congress or the American people with the Iran-IAEA side deal, relieving us of our duty to provide an up-or-down vote until he fulfills that prerequisite."

"When the Obama Administration negotiated a nuclear deal with Iran, he was making a deal with one of the most dangerous countries in the world. Under the Corker legislation, Congress holds the right to see all aspects of the deal before making a decision on it. President Obama has not fulfilled his part of the Corker Bill. The House should not move forward.

"I voted against the Corker legislation precisely because it sets up a scenario where Congress legitimizes the President's bad deal with Iran. Instead, we should pass legislation to treat the Iran deal like the treaty it is, subject to a two-thirds vote in the Senate."

The Congressional Research Service has confirmed that the text of the IAEA side-deal was never submitted to Congress.
