Polis statement on President's plan to improve financial aid access through the FAFSA

Statement

Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) released the following statement today regarding President Obama's announcement that the Department of Education will begin accepting prior-prior year tax returns for students filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA):

"The President's decision to allow students to use prior-prior year tax data on their FAFSA applications is an important step toward making federal financial aid more accessible for students and families. The current process, which requires students to wait until the spring before they attend college to complete their application, often forces students to make important decisions about college without knowing how much they'll receive in federal aid. Using prior-prior year tax data is a commonsense solution -- one that I've advocated for in Congress. I'm glad to see the President taking the initiative to make this change."

In July, Polis introduced the Simplifying the Application for Student Aid Act along with Reps. Phil Roe (R-TN), Joe Heck (R-NV), and Mark Pocan (D-WI).
