Updates from Around San Diego

Dear Friend,

During August the House doesn't take votes, but it doesn't take an act of Congress to serve San Diegans. Last month I took part in events and workshops across the region to support our small business, education, arts, and military communities.

Boosting Local Small Businesses

Supporting our small and emerging businesses is necessary for growth and job creation in our region. I hosted a discussion with the local startup community and the Downtown San Diego Partnership about my work to help small businesses grow by cutting red tape, and to get local businesses online at free workshops with Facebook and Google.

Launching Bold Education Ideas

San Diego is now home to the first public biotech lab in the country. This groundbreaking facility at the La Jolla-Riford Library will expose students to careers in STEM fields and prepare them to be a part of our future workforce.

Celebrating our Renewable Energy Leadership

The U.S. Navy signed the largest ever renewable energy purchase by a federal entity with San Diego's Sempra Energy. This agreement furthers the military's desire to diversify its fuel supplies, and reinforces San Diego's leadership in developing innovative energy technologies.

Helping Local Artists Access Federal Grants

San Diego has long has a vibrant arts community, and I joined with Congresswoman Susan Davis to host a workshop for local nonprofit arts and culture organizations on how to maximize their potential for winning federally-funded grants.
