Senators Collins, King Announce Federal Funding for Local Law Enforcement

U.S. Senators Susan Collins and Angus King announced today that the U.S. Department of Justice has awarded $625,000 in grant funding to five Maine Law Enforcement Departments as part of the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program.

"It is critically important that we provide law enforcement with the resources needed to keep our communities safe," said Senators Collins and King in a joint statement. "This investment signifies a strong commitment to the men and women who are fighting crime and protecting our communities every day."

The COPS Hiring Program provides direct funding to law enforcement agencies to hire new or rehire career law enforcement officers allowing state and local law enforcement agencies nationwide to increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.

The awards are as follows:

Cumberland County Sheriff's Department: $125,000

The Town of Fort Kent: $125,000

Norway Police Department: $125,000

Old Town Police Department: $125,000

Winslow Police Department: $125,000
