Like you, I am very concerned about the out-of-control spending by our government, and the enormous debt future Americans will inherit. More government is not the answer. More spending is not the answer. More taxes are not the answer. The answers are found through hard choices to cut spending and to limit the government, thereby ensuring a stronger, safer America for tomorrow.
As you may know, in the last four years our national debt has increased by $5.8 trillion to nearly $16.5 trillion, which translates into $52,200 per citizen and $145,800 per taxpayer. Entitlement programs are consuming over 60 percent of all federal spending each year, and interest payments on our debt have become the sixth largest category in the federal budget. Congress must remember what hard working Americans already know: we cannot build a thriving economy on a bloated government that spends and taxes too much. If we do not change course, current fiscal policies will push our debt burden to over $22 trillion by 2022.
As Congress considers new spending legislation this year, I will not stand idly by while they spend taxpayers' hard-earned money and America into oblivion. Hardworking families are buckling down and working within their budget. It's time for Washington to do the same.
