Press Release

Date: July 23, 2015
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Immigration

Today, Congressman Kevin Cramer joined a majority of his colleagues in the United States House of Representatives to pass H.R. 3009, the Enforce the Law for Sanctuary Cities Act. The act prohibits state and local governments from receiving federal funds under the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP) if they have enacted laws, policies, or procedures inhibiting the enforcement of immigration laws or prohibiting state or local law enforcement officials from gathering information regarding the citizenship or immigration status of any individual.

"These sanctuary city policies may sound good to some people, but many are realizing they ultimately create unsafe, violent communities. You simply cannot have policies designed to attract criminals and expect a different outcome. It used to be cities complied with federal laws as a matter of common decency. These sanctuary cities violate immigration laws with abandon while receiving federal funds making Congress complicit in their illegal activity. Our bill cuts them off if they fail to enforce our nation's immigration laws. It shouldn't be too much to expect local leaders to uphold the law. If they don't there will be consequences," said Cramer.
