Congressman Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) today voted in support of legislation that would take action to deal with sanctuary cities and protect Americans from criminal illegal aliens. Blackburn issued the following statement in support of H.R. 3009, the Enforce the Law for Sanctuary Cities Act:

"When will President Obama and Democrats in Congress accept responsibility for their lawless policies, which are clearly jeopardizing the safety of American citizens? Democrats owe the American people an explanation. They owe an explanation to the family of Kathryn Steinle who was murdered in San Francisco.

"The truth is that Democrats are hijacking our sovereignty. Their failed policies have turned America into a sanctuary nation. Rather than work with Republicans to pass true reforms to encourage legal immigration, they have done nothing but discourage law enforcement.

"Sanctuary city policies and Executive amnesty have turned every state into a border state and every town into a border town. Democrats have created an open borders society that is making Americans less safe.

"The legislation approved by the House today is a good first step as part of our effort to end the sanctuary policies that put American lives in danger, but more must be done. We must continue to take action on policies to enforce the law and protect Americans from criminal illegal aliens. That is why for the last eight years I have authored the CLEAR Act, legislation that would help ensure our local and state law enforcement officers have the tools they need to work with federal law enforcement in an effort to detain and deport criminal illegal aliens. It's imperative that we put in place solutions that will help keep our communities safe and restore the sense of security our constituents want to feel and deserve to have."
