Gov. Scott: Fort Lauderdale Gained More Than 25,000 Jobs Over the Year

Today, Governor Rick Scott announced that the Fort Lauderdale area gained 25,700 jobs over the year in July 2015. The Fort Lauderdale metro area's unemployment rate declined by 1.1 percentage point over the year, from 6.3 percent in July 2014 to 5.2 percent in July 2015. Florida businesses have added 917,400 private-sector jobs since December 2010.

Governor Scott said, "We are working every day to cut taxes and create a business friendly environment in Florida. I am excited to announce another month of positive job growth in Fort Lauderdale and look forward to seeing many more businesses and families succeed in the South Florida."

The industries with the largest job gains over the year were construction with 4,900 new jobs, trade, transportation, and utilities with 4,600 new jobs, professional and business services with 4,500 new jobs, and education and health services with 4,300 new jobs. In July 2015, the Fort Lauderdale metro area added the most jobs of all the state's metro areas in construction. Nine of the ten major industry sectors gained jobs over the year in July 2015. In July 2015, the Fort Lauderdale metro area was ranked fourth among all metro areas in Florida for online job demand with 22,258 openings and also ranked fourth for high wage, high skill science technology engineering math (STEM) job openings with 5,577 job openings.

Florida created 16,900 private-sector jobs in July 2015, and a total of 917,400 private-sector jobs since December 2010. Florida's statewide unemployment rate for July 2015 was 5.4 percent. In July, more than 36,600 Floridians were placed in jobs by CareerSource Broward and the state's other 23 regional workforce boards.
