Gov. Scott: Miami Area Added More than 27,000 Jobs Over the Year

Governor Rick Scott announced today that the Miami area gained 27,700 new jobs in July 2015 compared to a year ago, the third highest number of jobs among all metro areas. The area's unemployment rate declined by 1.0 percentage point over the year, from 7.1 percent in July 2014 to 6.1 percent in July 2015. Florida businesses have added 917,400 private-sector jobs since December 2010.

Governor Scott said, "With more than 27,000 new jobs over the year in July, Miami had the third highest number of jobs added across Florida, which is great news. Businesses are succeeding in South Florida, which means more opportunities for families to live their dreams right here in the Sunshine State."

The industries with the largest job gains over the year in the metro area were leisure and hospitality with 7,500 new jobs, trade, transportation, and utilities with 6,200 new jobs, and professional and business services with 6,100 new jobs. The Miami metro area had the third-highest online job demand in Florida in July 2015 with 31,004 job openings and had the third-highest number of openings for high wage, high skill science technology engineering math (STEM) occupations in July 2015 with 7,080 online openings.

Florida created 16,900 private-sector jobs in July 2015, and a total of 917,400 private-sector jobs since December 2010. Florida's statewide unemployment rate for July 2015 was 5.4 percent. In July, more than 36,600 Floridians were placed in jobs by CareerSource South Florida and the state's other 23 regional workforce boards.
