Van Hollen Statement on EPA Methane Pollution Standards

Statement

Issues: Environment

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, the lead House Co-Chair of the Bicameral Task Force on Climate Change, praised the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) newly proposed methane pollution reduction standards.

"The proposed standards EPA announced today will reduce methane emissions in the oil and gas sector, an encouraging step forward to protect Americans from the dangerous impacts of climate change. Methane is an extremely potent greenhouse gas, and reducing emissions from fossil fuel extraction and transport is a common-sense and effective way to combat climate change and protect our environment. To more comprehensively tackle methane emissions, we must also work to expand reduction targets beyond new sources to include existing sources of oil and gas production as well."
