Van Hollen Statement on July Jobs Report

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement on the Department of Labor's July Jobs Report announcing that the U.S. economy added 215,000 jobs in July:

"Today's employment report marks another good month of steady job growth. In July, 215,000 jobs were created and we had our 65th consecutive month of private sector job growth. But with the end of the fiscal year and the threat of a government shutdown rapidly approaching, Washington Republicans are paddling calmly down the river with a huge waterfall ahead. The fact that Republicans aren't scrambling to come to the table suggests they're perfectly happy with a government shutdown, which is underscored by their recent obsession with cutting funding for women's health with no regard for the damaging consequences.

"Families in Maryland and across the country are working harder than ever but feel like they're stuck in place or falling behind. Now is the time to govern responsibly -- not by manufactured crisis -- and ensure our economy rewards those working hard to get ahead."
