Van Hollen Applauds President Obama's Overtime Proposal

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen issued the following statement applauding President Obama's new proposal to extend overtime protections to nearly 5 million workers in 2016:

"Families all over our country are working harder than ever, but feel like they're stuck on a treadmill or falling behind. Despite increased productivity by working Americans, wages remain flat and the wealth gap only continues to grow. Growing our economy with more widely shared prosperity is the challenge of our time, and President Obama's proposal to extend overtime pay to nearly 5 million workers is an important piece of that effort. The plan would guarantee overtime pay to most salaried workers earning less than an estimated $50,440 next year.

"For years, too many hardworking Americans haven't received the overtime benefits they deserve. This plan will ensure that those working long hours away from their families are finally getting fair compensation. It also helps renew the promise that it pays to work hard in our country."
