Director Archuleta:

Many of my constituents woke last Friday to the troubling news that they may be the victims of a data security breach at OPM. This is the second time in less than a year that OPM has suffered such a breach. I am writing to understand what immediate steps you are taking to prevent a recurrence of such an event and what you are doing to ensure that the data that was accessed cannot be used to threaten the financial security of the victims.

This inquiry is made more urgent by the fact that so little is known about what data was stolen during the breach. News reports indicate that the only thing that is known with certainty is what was accessed, not what was taken. Millions of federal employees whose Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses and other vital financial information are entrusted to your care are vulnerable to serious harm due to this breach. This is particularly disturbing given reports that OPM has known about the breach for months, but chose to disclose the information only now.
