Fischer Responds to Supreme Court Decision on ObamaCare Subsidies

U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) released the following statement after today's Supreme Court decision on ObamaCare subsidies in the case of King v. Burwell:

"Today's decision is disappointing. For years now, we have witnessed the devastating impacts of this flawed law. More than 18,000 Nebraskans have contacted my office to express their concerns with higher costs and fewer choices. Rather than seeing doctors they like at costs they can afford, these Nebraskans are left with fewer options and more headaches. That's not what we were promised.

"I am committed to working with my colleagues to promote policies that will reduce costs and improve care. For now, we must focus on ways to scrap this law and replace it with a system that improves patient-centered care. I will continue to make this my priority for Nebraska families and the millions of Americans who are still struggling to find quality and affordable health care."

This morning, the Supreme Court upheld a key component of President Obama's health care law, commonly referred to as ObamaCare. The court deliberated on the legality of the IRS's regulation that extends health insurance subsidies to people in 37 states (including Nebraska) who bought insurance on the federal exchange.

Well before the passage of ObamaCare, America's health care system faced serious challenges to ensuring that Americans have access to quality, affordable health care. Solving these problems requires a common-sense approach to reform. Senator Fischer has been a strong supporter of several policies to improve our nation's health care system, including:

Repealing the individual and employer mandate

Repealing the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB)

Returning the definition of full-time employment to forty hours

Returning regulatory control over health insurance to the states

Allowing the purchase of health insurance across state lines

Enacting medical malpractice reform

Maintaining protections for individuals with pre-existing conditions
