U.S. Senator Deb Fischer -- Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities -- released the following statement regarding the deaths of two hostages, one being an American, in a counterintelligence raid that took place in January of this year:
"This is a tragedy and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of these innocent victims. By its very nature, any counterterrorism operation carries with it extreme risk to our soldiers, as well as the local populations where terrorists hide among the innocent.
"We will continue to work with the Department of Defense to ensure that deadly force is judiciously applied and lessons learned are incorporated into future military decisions."
This morning, President Obama declassified a counterterrorism operation that resulted in the deaths of two hostages in January.
