Police Organization Honors Ayotte for Passing Bill to Help Families of Fallen Public Safety Officers

The National Association of Police Organizations this week presented U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte with the 2015 Outstanding Member of Congress Award for her steadfast support of law enforcement and her successful efforts to enact legislation that exempts public safety officer survivor benefits from federal taxation.

"I am honored and humbled to receive this award. Public safety officers in New Hampshire and across the country risk their lives every day in order to keep us safe, and I am committed to continuing my work in the Senate to support law enforcement and eliminate burdens for the families of our fallen and disabled public safety officers," said Senator Ayotte.

Last month, President Obama signed into law legislation introduced by Senators Ayotte and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) that will ensure that death benefits paid to the families of public safety officers who lose their lives in the line of duty are not subject to federal income tax. The Don't Tax Our Fallen Public Safety Heroes Act passed the Senate and House unanimously.

The National Association of Police Organizations (NAPO) represents more than 1,000 police units and associations, over 241,000 sworn law enforcement officers, and more than 100,000 citizens across the country.
