Ayotte Statement on Senate Passage of Trade Promotion Authority

U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) today released the following statement regarding passage of bipartisan Trade Promotion Authority legislation, which the Senate approved in a 62 to 37 vote:

"I voted in support of renewing Trade Promotion Authority, which New Hampshire businesses have told me would help give them fair and equal access to sell their goods and services in new markets, thereby creating more jobs in New Hampshire," said Ayotte. "TPA is an important tool that will increase American trade, helping New Hampshire businesses create jobs and strengthening our economy."

TPA expired in 2007 and has not been renewed since. TPA is a tool that would improve U.S. negotiating power when it comes to trade deals, increase transparency, and protect and elevate Congress' role in the trade negotiation process. Without TPA, any administration can negotiate a trade agreement on their own terms without clear direction from Congress. The TPA legislation was previously approved by the Senate Finance Committee on a bipartisan basis. The bill now goes to the House of Representatives for consideration.
