Governor Maggie Hassan issued the following statement after today signing House Bill 219, relative to the permissible uses of electronic benefit transfer (EBT) cards:
"We must always work to protect taxpayer dollars against public assistance fraud or abuse while also ensuring that those who need and qualify for financial support can purchase basic essential items. House Bill 219 allows for an enforceable approach to achieve this goal and it does not create the potential for discrimination, unlike Senate Bill 169.
"By adding specific facilities to the list of establishments where the use of EBT cards is prevented and requiring an educational component for cash assistance recipients and retail establishments, House Bill 219 strengthens our efforts to protect against public assistance fraud or abuse. I thank Representative McMahon, legislators from both parties and members of the advocacy community for their efforts on this bipartisan legislation."
