Congressman Doug Collins Applauds the Passage of the Student Success Act, Including Transparency Amendment

Statement

Congressman Doug Collins issued the following statement on the passage of the Student Success Act, which included his own amendment, in the House of Representatives tonight:

"We had to do something to fix the damage of No Child Left Behind. The Student Success Act consolidates the K-12 education programs that work, converting them into new Local Academic Flexible Grants, and eliminating over 70 ineffective programs. Teachers will have renewed authority in their classroom, as this bill will prevent states from being forced by the government to adopt inflexible and damaging programs like Common Core. Parents have the freedom to enroll their children in local magnet or charter schools, if they choose to do so. As the husband of a public school teacher, and the parent of three children who attended public school, I am delighted we finally have a new approach that will give autonomy back to the states."

"My amendment to this bill strengthens the oversight process for the grant programs that are part of this package. It requires that grantees comply with monitoring requirements, and have regular compliance reviews. This will prevent taxpayer funds from being used for pet projects, as was rampant in No Child Left Behind. For as long as President Obama has been in office, No Child Left Behind has been operating without Congressional authorization, and it is crucial that we rein in an education system that is broken and desperately in need of our fullest attention."
