Gov. Scott: The Tampa Area Added More Than 32,000 Jobs Over the Year in June 2015

Today, Governor Rick Scott announced the Tampa-St. Petersburg area added 32,900 new jobs over the year in June 2015. The unemployment rate in the Tampa metro area declined by 0.9 percentage point over the year from 6.2 percent in June 2014 to 5.3 percent in June 2015. Florida businesses have added more than 896,000 private-sector jobs since December 2010.

Governor Scott said, "The Tampa Bay area created the second-highest number of jobs of all areas in the state last month, which is great news. The economy in the Tampa Bay area is thriving and we will continue to work every day to ensure that businesses can create more jobs for Florida families."

The industries with the largest gain in jobs over the year were leisure and hospitality with 11,000 new jobs, education and health services with 7,700 new jobs, and trade, transportation, and utilities with 6,500 new jobs. The Tampa Bay area was first among the state metro areas in online job demand in June 2015 with 50,853 openings. The metro area was also first in the state in demand for high wage, high skill science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) occupations with 15,531 openings in June.

Florida created 12,200 private-sector jobs in June 2015, and a total of 896,900 private-sector jobs since December 2010. Florida's statewide unemployment rate for June 2015 was 5.5 percent. In June, more than 33,200 Floridians were placed in jobs by CareerSource Tampa Bay and the state's other 23 regional workforce boards.
