Gov. Rick Scott: Miami Area Added More Than 30,000 Jobs Over the Year in May 2015

Today, Governor Rick Scott announced the Miami metro area gained 30,500 new jobs over the year in May 2015, the third highest number of jobs among all metro areas. The area's unemployment rate declined by 0.8 percentage point over the year, from 7.1 percent in May 2014 to 6.3 percent in May 2015. Florida businesses have added more than 879,000 private-sector jobs since December 2010.

Governor Scott said, "With more than 30,000 new jobs in Miami over the year in May, Miami's economy continues to have impressive growth. Families across Florida are finding more opportunities to succeed, and we will continue to do all we can to build our economy and create new jobs."

The industries with the largest job gains over the year in the metro area were trade, transportation, and utilities with 8,300 new jobs, education and health services with 7,300 new jobs, and leisure and hospitality with 6,400 new jobs. Nine of the ten major industry sectors in the Miami area gained jobs over the year in May 2015. The Miami metro area had the third-highest online job demand in Florida in May 2015 with 35,099 job openings and had the third-highest number of openings for high wage, high skill science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) occupations in May 2015 with 7,724 online openings.

Florida created 16,200 private-sector jobs in May 2015, and a total of 879,700 private-sector jobs since December 2010. Florida's statewide unemployment rate for May 2015 was 5.7 percent. In May, more than 33,200 Floridians were placed in jobs by CareerSource South Florida and the state's other 23 Regional Workforce Boards.
