Gov. Rick Scott: Fort Lauderdale Added More Than 26,000 Jobs Over the Year in May 2015

Today, Governor Rick Scott announced the Fort Lauderdale metro area gained 26,700 jobs over the year in May 2015. The Ft. Lauderdale metro area's unemployment rate declined by 0.7 percentage point over the year, from 5.9 percent in May 2014 to 5.2 percent in May 2015. Florida businesses have added more than 879,000 private-sector jobs since December 2010.

Governor Scott said, "We are excited to announce the Fort Lauderdale area added 26,700 jobs over the year in May and that Florida has added a total of 879,700 private-sector jobs since December 2010."

The industries with the largest job gains over the year were construction with 5,000 new jobs, education and health services with 4,600 new jobs, and trade, transportation, and utilities with 4,400 new jobs. In May 2015, the Ft. Lauderdale metro area added the most jobs of all the state's metro areas in construction, as well as in information with 600 new jobs. All ten major industry sectors gained jobs over the year in May 2015. The Ft. Lauderdale metro area was ranked fourth among all metro areas in Florida for online job demand with 24,275 openings and also ranked fourth for high wage, high skill science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) job openings with 5,859 job openings.

Florida created 16,200 private-sector jobs in May 2015, and a total of 879,700 private-sector jobs since December 2010. Florida's statewide unemployment rate for May 2015 was 5.7 percent. In May, more than 33,200 Floridians were placed in jobs by CareerSource Broward and the state's other 23 Regional Workforce Boards.
