Gov. Rick Scott: Orlando Area Leads Florida in Job Creation

Today, Governor Rick Scott announced that the Orlando area gained 44,000 new jobs over the year in May 2015, the highest number of new jobs among all Florida metro areas for the 28th consecutive month. The Orlando area's unemployment rate declined by 0.7 percentage point over the year, from 5.9 percent in May 2014 to 5.2 percent in May 2015. Florida businesses have added more than 879,000 private-sector jobs since December 2010.
Governor Scott said, "Orlando continues to lead the state's metro areas in job creation with 44,000 new jobs created over the year. In all, Florida has added 879,700 new private-sector jobs since December 2010. This job growth, along with high job demand and a decreasing unemployment rate, shows that our policies to create a business-friendly state are working across Florida."
Governor Scott made the announcement in Kissimmee at Photon-X, an imaging technology company that will be creating 110 new jobs in the Orlando area. Photon-X staff consists of technologists and engineers providing technical expertise in a variety of areas including optics, imaging, sensors, photonics, physics and computer science.
In May 2015, the Orlando metro area led Florida metro areas in job gains over the year in leisure and hospitality with 12,000 new jobs, trade, transportation, and utilities with 11,300 new jobs, and professional and business services with 7,200 new jobs. All ten major industry sectors gained jobs over the year in May 2015. The metro area had the second-highest online job demand in Florida in May 2015 with 37,781 openings and also ranked number two in high wage, high skill science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) demand in the state with 9,252 openings in those fields.
Florida created 16,200 private-sector jobs in May 2015, and a total of 879,700 private-sector jobs since December 2010. Florida's statewide unemployment rate for May 2015 was 5.7 percent. In May, more than 33,200 Floridians were placed in jobs by CareerSource Central Florida and the state's other 23 Regional Workforce Boards.
