What is the Political Courage Test?

Georgia Congressional Special Election, District Jr, 2020 Political Courage Test

Unknown Position Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Framing the issue as either pro-life or pro-choice misses the main point. The issue is about the right of the woman to decide what happens with her body and when. She should make that decision with the assistance of her medical doctor. Women who may decide to terminate a pregnancy and those who support her decision should not be labeled as not being pro-life.
Yes In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Yes Do you support expanding federal funding to support entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare?
Yes Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
There needs to be campaign finance reform that includes the full disclosure of the sources of campaign contributions as well as placing limits on the amount of contributions. Public financing of campaigns would level the playing field and increase the diversity of candidates.
Unknown Position Do you support the protection of government officials, including law enforcement officers, from personal liability in civil lawsuits concerning alleged misconduct?
There can be some limited protection for government officials including law enforcement officers from personal liability in civil lawsuits if the harm they cause is not the result of gross or intentional misconduct. Taxpayers should not bear the burden of paying any judgments awarded in those instances.
Unknown Position Do you support increasing defense spending?
The levels of defense spending should be reviewed to make sure they are properly aligned with national defense and security needs. A lot of resources are directed for the development and acquisition of new weapon systems that become obsolete over time without being used for defense purposes.
Yes Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes Do you support providing financial relief to businesses AND/OR corporations negatively impacted by the state of national emergency for COVID-19?
Unknown Position Do you support lowering corporate taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
The evidence that lowering corporate tax rates promotes conomic growth is mixed. A large number of corporations are able to use various tax provisions to avoid paying any taxes; in those instances the actual tax rate does not make a difference.
Unknown Position Do you support requiring states to adopt federal education standards?
Education is regulated and financed on a local basis. Federal funding should be expanded to ensure that all children have access to a high quality public education. There can be federal education standards and recommendations that provide guidance for local school districts.
Yes Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)?
Yes Do you support the federal regulation of greenhouse gas emissions?
Regulating greenhouse gas and other toxic emissions on the federal level is very important. The environmental review needs to be based on the cumulative effect of toxic emissions in areas rather than just the individual project. Many communities are overly burdened by toxic emissions that dramatically affect their health and quality of life.
Yes Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
There needs to be a balanced approach to reasonable gun control, safety, and the Second Amendment.
No Do you support repealing the 2010 Affordable Care Act ("Obamacare")?
Unknown Position Do you support requiring businesses to provide paid medical leave during public health crises, such as COVID-19?
Access to Healthcare, including paid medical leave, needs to be provided as a basic right and not tied to a person's job. Many businesses have been severely impacted by COVID-19 and may not have the ability to provide paid medical leave or health insurance for their employees.
No Do you support the construction of a wall along the Mexican border?
Unknown Position Do you support requiring immigrants who are unlawfully present to return to their country of origin before they are eligible for citizenship?
Having border security is important and can be achieved in ways other than the construction of a wall along the Mexican border. There is also a border with Canada, but there has not been any talk of building a wall. A reasonable immigration policy needs to be developed that respects the dignity of immigrants who are in the country for different reasons - such as fleeing persecution; or seeking economic opportunities.
Yes Do you support reducing military intervention in Middle East conflicts?
Unknown Position Should the United States use military force to prevent governments hostile to the U.S. from possessing a weapon of mass destruction (for example: nuclear, biological, chemical)?
History has shown that the use of military force is not an effective or efficient way to prevent governments from possessing a weapon of mass destruction. I support reducing all military interventions. The human, economic and financial costs are too high.
Yes Do you generally support removing barriers to international trade (for example: tariffs, quotas, etc.)?
My top priority includes reducing, with the goal of eliminating, the inequities that exist in the areas of housing, employment, economic and business development, healthcare, education and the criminal justice system. There are many federal programs that already exist and are funded through agencies such as HUD, DOJ, Dept. of Education, Dept. of Commerce. There would be a review of the programs to determine how to maximize their impact with the current levels of funding. Additional funding sources could be identified through the development of private and public partnerships.
