Moreover, to further assist all borrowers and make the repayment process more manageable, I propose dropping the interest rates on all federal student loans to 0%. High-interest rates often leave borrowers paying off the interest for years before even touching the principal amount of their loans. By eliminating interest, we ensure that payments go directly toward reducing the principal, thus speeding up the debt repayment process. This approach would provide immediate relief to millions of Americans, allowing them to invest in their futures and the U.S. economy more broadly. Implementing a 0% interest rate would also reflect a fair acknowledgment of the economic reality many young Americans face today compared to previous generations. The exponential rise in tuition costs compared to wage growth is a disparity that unfairly penalizes the current generation. It is essential that our policies adapt to these changing economic landscapes to support rather than hinder the next generation's financial stability. Additionally, while forgiving debt and reducing interest rates are crucial steps forward, we must also address the root causes of high student debt levels. This means increasing funding for public colleges and universities to reduce the need for loans in the first place and holding private institutions accountable for their role in the student debt crisis.
