| My top legislative priorities involve electoral reform in the state of Virginia. First, we must make ballot access fair and equal for all candidates regardless of their political affiliation. We need to abolish the law that requires that Republican and Democratic candidates be listed before independent and third-party candidates. We should end tax-payer-funded primaries and require political parties to pay for their own nomination contests. We need to make it easier for political parties to be recognized by the state so that we have more than two legal parties in Virginia. We should promote electoral reform either by using ranked-choice voting (thus eliminating "wasted" votes or by adopting mixed-member proportional representation as they do in Germany or New Zealand where a diverse variety of political options can flourish and parties have to work together rather than merely demonize each other as is done in the United States. |
