Sherri Grogan has provided voters with clear stances on key issues by responding to the 2020 Political Courage Test.
| Pro-choice | a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support legalizing abortion when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape? | ||
| No | c) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions? | ||
| I support reducing unplanned pregnancies through increased education and making birth control more readily available rather than banning abortions or restricting women's rights. Public funding should continue to be provided to organizations that provide services such as wellness check-ups, mammograms, birth control and testing for sexually transmitted diseases. There is already a law that prohibits taxpayer dollars from being used for abortions. | |||
| No | a) In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions? | ||
| Yes | b) In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support lowering the state sales tax on groceries? | ||
| Yes | d) Do you support the creation of a tax on internet streaming services? | ||
| Yes | e) Do you support prohibiting the reallocation of funds designated for highway projects? | ||
| I support a fair tax policy where everyone pays their fair share. Generally speaking, I am not in favor of tax increases but might support one on the highest tax bracket. | |||
| Yes | a) Do you support a limit on campaign contributions to state candidates? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting? | ||
| Yes | d) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls? | ||
| Yes | e) Do you support automatic voter registration? | ||
| I also support broadening the use of permanent advance ballots for anyone who wants to sign-up versus those with a disability. | |||
| No | a) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes? | ||
| No | b) Should an individual under 18 accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult? | ||
| No | c) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police? | ||
| d) Do you support the use of private prisons in Kansas? | |||
| No | e) Do you support mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent drug offenders? | ||
| Capital punishment - generally do not support. Prosecution of minors - it depends on the age of the minor (i.e., age 12 vs. 17) and crime as to whether I support the person being prosecuted as an adult. Immigration enforcement - federal immigration laws should be enforced by federal immigration agents; state and local police on their own are not equipped to enforce the immigration laws. Private prisons - need to better understand the pros and cons including the financials. | |||
| Yes | a) Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support lowering state income taxes as a means of promoting economic growth? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support reducing government regulations on the private sector? | ||
| No | d) Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits? | ||
| Yes | e) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of Kansas? | ||
| No | f) Do you support requiring employers to provide paid family leave? | ||
| Yes | g) Do you support providing financial relief to businesses AND/OR corporations negatively impacted by the state of national emergency for COVID-19? | ||
| Yes | h) Do you support the legalization of mobile sports betting and wagering? | ||
| Lowering state income taxes - right now, no; in the future as the state prospers, yes. Reducing government regulation - yes, but we need to be smart about it. Drug testing - in theory, yes; however, in reality this may not be worth the administrative cost based on what other states have learned from the program. Paid leave - sounds good but probably not be feasible for small mom and pop businesses; businesses should be able to offer this without a government mandate. COVID-19 relief - yes, but we need to carefully scrutinize the recipients. | |||
| Yes | a) Do you support adopting federal education standards in Kansas? | ||
| No | b) Do you support state funding for charter schools? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support increasing teacher salaries AND/OR benefits in Kansas? | ||
| Yes | d) Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from Kansas high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities? | ||
| Federal standards - we need to meet or exceed the federal standards so our Kansas children do not fall behind. Charter schools - do not support providing state funding unless the charter schools are held to the same standards. Immigrants - "Dreamers" that have been in the US from an early age should be allowed to attend universities using in-state tuition rates as they go through the process to become legal citizens. | |||
| Yes | a) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives? | ||
| d) Other or expanded principles: | |||
| Yes | a) Do you generally support gun-control legislation? | ||
| Yes | b) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows? | ||
| No | c) Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom after passing gun safety training? | ||
| No | d) Should a license be required for gun ownership? | ||
| Guns in the classroom - do not favor this because a person's state of mind can change due to life circumstances which pushes them over the edge. I would not want to jeopardize the safety of our children in any way. License for gun ownership - do not think it would be a good use of time to pursue this in Kansas - not enough supporters; there are other issues that are a higher priority. | |||
| Yes | a) Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support Medicaid expansion through Kansas' health care programs? | ||
| No | c) Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance? | ||
| Yes | d) Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia? | ||
| No | e) Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations? | ||
| No | f) Do you support requiring businesses to provide paid medical leave during public health crises, such as COVID-19? | ||
| Treatment facilities - increased funding is needed for mental health issues as well as drug abuse. Paid medical leave - businesses should be able to offer this without a government mandate; however, I do support businesses providing paid medical leave to their workers during a public health crisis. | |||
| Yes | a) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Kansas' anti-discrimination laws? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Kansas' anti-discrimination laws? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support greater efforts by Kansas state government in closing the pay gap between men and women? | ||
| No | d) Do you support expanding anti-discrimination laws to include hair textures and protective hairstyles? | ||
| Hair textures and hairstyles - should already be covered by race and/or religion protections. | |||
| One priority is the expansion of internet access which will provide economic opportunity, work-from-home jobs, improve remote learning and tele-medicine. | |||
| The top legislative priority is expanding Medicaid to improve health outcomes for our most vulnerable population. This will help reduce unplanned pregnancies, suicides, kids in foster care, crime, domestic violence, and incarceration rates. The majority of the funding will come from federal funding with the remainder to be provided by the state. New jobs will be created by expanding medical services and that will bring in additional taxes. Any remaining gap in funding will be filled by reallocating funds from other line items. |
