| Capital punishment prosecution and appeals are only worthwhile for revenge, not to deter crime. Local officials shouldn't be playing federal enforcers. Let ICE do their job. Kansas should never have a private prison, as it would become a site of incredible violence, like facilities elsewhere. I support decriminalization of marijuana, but barring that a pass through law for people coming from Colorado possessing small amounts of cannabis. It would require tax stamps to be purchased at locations along the border. Those without stamps if stopped could then be prosecuted for not having a stamp. | |||

As for charter schools, my district is loaded with small, public school districts. When you get right down to it, our rural schools are charter schools. DREAMERs are fine with me. | |||

It's not a profitable enterprise for public companies to operate these facilities in rural areas. It will be, sad to say, up to the State of Kansas to operate these facilities. The hurdles an urban legislature will give to this legislation will be significant, but it's about the only solution to this crisis. | |||

| Rural Kansas is too special to see it die. I've reported on Kansas and Kansans for 40+ years, and I know and love this place we call home. My priorities: Medicaid expansion, funding education through COVID-19, keeping FHSU and the Norton Correctional Facility strong, funding safe highways, and reducing property taxes so rural elderly people may remain in the dignity of the homes they've scrimped and saved lifetimes to own. I also want to work with USDA Rural Development to cover every scrap of northwest Kansas with broadband internet, since that's too big for a state project. | |||
| Top priority: Medicaid expansion. Without it, nothing else happens. If we don't have expansion, within two years I'll bet half the critical access hospitals in the 40th District will close. When they close, school districts will accelerate their consolidation, nursing homes will shutter, Main Streets will see more boarded fronts, the paved county roads used to haul crops to the elevator will turn to dirt. The grocery store, gas station, diner, bar, and even the funeral home will go, since no one will be left to bury. |
