| Abortion should be avoided whenever possible, and greater resources should go to providing alternatives like adoption. One big part of the issue is that women who want abortions will find a way to get one even if it is illegal, generally at greater risk to their health, and requiring people who don't generally break our laws to do so. I also do believe that this is a women's choice issue, not something that should be legislated, it is a precedent that gives government too much power in regulating health and life choices. | |||

| While I personally feel the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police is ok, the choice has to be up to the state and officers. They don't always have the resources to enforce these laws and their first responsibility is to responding to safety issues in our community, not taking on the added responsibilities this enforcement would include. I answered I do not support mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent drug offenders because the judge should be given the opportunity to take into consideration mitigating factors in any specific case. Mandatory sentences have not served our communities historically. | |||

| Regarding Minimum wage, I support allowing local governments to set minimum wages just as Denver did last November, bumping the city's minimum wage up to $12.85 on Jan. 1 with a second raise to $14.77 in 2021 and a third to $15.87 in 2022. Also, to clarify, only if the state budget can afford it do I support lowering state income taxes as a means of promoting economic growth. Regarding reducing government regulations on the private sector, it depends on the sector, the question was vague and non-specific but there are areas where we can reduce government regulation. | |||

| It should be up to the board of each Colorado public university to decide if unlawful immigrants who live in Colorado, and graduate from a Colorado High School should be offered in-state tuition. We don't need to legislate everything, this is an example of over legislation, let the university boards decide. This wasn't part of the question but it is part of the solution, give them a path to legal citizenship so they need not remain as an "unlawful immigrant". | |||

| Generally, I support legislation that leads to a cleaner environment, however it does need to be done through a fiscally sustainable transition of economy and jobs to greener energy, not by gutting the oil and gas industry. When we have the budget for it I would support state funding for the development of renewable energy through things like subsidies and tax incentives for renewable energy companies. | |||

| I support our 2nd amendment right to bear Arms, with safety measures, such as background checks. Remember that most state laws, as well as federal law, prohibit anyone convicted of a felony from possessing firearms or ammunition; without a background check for gun sales, including between private citizens at gun shows, there is no way to determine if the buyer is a felon, or under a ERPO. Colorado's child access prevention law is one of the weakest in our country, I support safer storage laws that would reduce accidental discharge deaths, tragedies of suicide, and gun theft. | |||

If they can't afford it they should apply for Medicaid, I support Colorado providing an affordable public option so more people can afford a plan they pay for. Individual purchase requirements is not a simple yes or no question. Likewise requiring businesses to provide paid medical leave during public health crises is not a simple yes or no question. If the business is big enough then yes they should provide it and receive state assistance like a tax incentive, small businesses would close if required to provide paid medical so I don't support that instance. | |||

| My first priority is addressing the needs of Colorado citizens and our state budget losses in order to recover from the virus as quickly and efficiently as possible. We need to be very thoughtful and creative in balancing our budget by considering the most pressing needs of our citizens, locally owned businesses, and our state programs. Next is improving our education system, including teacher retention, and overall improvement in serving our students' needs. Last is improving healthcare including greater access to mental health services and providing an affordable Colorado public option for those who choose it. | |||
| The top legislative priority will be the next budget to be voted on, voting on a budget does not require additional funding needs, it is the legislators time for which we are already paid. If tax revenue drops by half, state law will force the governor to cut spending, which would include state employee furloughs or pay cuts and we want to avoid that from happening due to our states revenue losses during COVID. There will need to be more compromise, discussion across the aisle, and work done with any increase in tax revenue or federal funding. |
