| As someone who would be the only renter in our entire 80-person assembly, it is a priority to ensure tenant protections, including a tenants right to counsel across the state, and the repeal of the Costa-Hawkins and Ellis Acts which permit rent gouging and speculative real estate to increase our population of unhoused folks. Moreover, as we move forward from COVID, we need to legislate health care for all Californians and accelerate jobs growth vis a vis a California Green New Deal that would also help us eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from our entire state lifestyle. | |||
| As shared above, we need a tenants' right to counsel to ensure that tenants facing possible eviction have the opportunity to consult with legal counsel before being taken to court by landlords or management companies. Cities and counties can source funding for local tenant counsel through a combination of defunding police and sheriff's department services currently assigned to lockouts and criminalization of homelessness, as well as taxes on local new developments priced above market level. State funds could be created in addition to support cities/counties in need of support via a tax on wealthy Californians with multiple large properties. |
